MBBS abroad for Pakistani students changed in 2026. PMDC now requires MDCAT, registration before you leave Pakistan, a recognised foreign medical college, and a national licensing exam when you return. Families who choose a university first and check these rules later can lose six years and their savings.
The good news: a medical degree abroad is still a real route to becoming a doctor, often at a lower cost than a private medical college in Pakistan — if every step is planned correctly from the start.
This guide to MBBS abroad for Pakistani students covers the new PMDC rules, the best countries, well-known medical schools, English and visa basics, realistic costs and five mistakes we see in files from Multan and across Punjab. Why MBBS Abroad for Pakistani Students Is Rising (2026–27)
Demand for MBBS abroad for Pakistani students keeps rising because government medical college seats in Pakistan are limited, private college fees are high, and many countries offer English-taught medical degrees. China, Central Asia and Europe all attract Pakistani pre-medical students every year, at very different costs and standards.
But the choice is no longer just “cheapest country wins”. PMDC rules now decide whether your degree will let you practise in Pakistan, so the plan must start with eligibility, not with a university brochure. Compare destinations on our study visa hub.
New PMDC Rules for MBBS Abroad for Pakistani Students (2026)
In May 2026, PMDC announced stricter rules for MBBS abroad for Pakistani students. The rules cover what you need before leaving Pakistan, which foreign colleges and degrees count, and what you must pass after graduating. Here is the overview; checking your case against them is part of your free assessment.
Before You Leave Pakistan
- At least 60% in FSc Pre-Medical (or an equivalent qualification)
- At least 50% in MDCAT taken in Pakistan (or an equivalent test under PMDC policy)
- Online registration with PMDC before taking admission abroad
The Foreign Medical College and Degree
- The college must be on PMDC’s recognised list and accredited by WFME or listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools
- The degree must run at least five years, with minimum teaching hours and 80% attendance
- Students are told to get a multiple-entry visa for the full study period and to complete a language course of the host country
After You Graduate
Every foreign graduate must pass PMDC’s National Registration Examination (NRE) to get a licence to practise in Pakistan. PMDC has also said graduates who don’t meet the conditions above will not be eligible to sit it.
You can read about how foreign medical schools are accredited on the World Federation for Medical Education website.

English Tests and Visas for MBBS Abroad
Every country has its own student visa, but the pattern for MBBS abroad for Pakistani students is the same: an admission letter from a recognised college, proof of funds, and English proof where required. Files fail when the PMDC steps, the money story or the English proof don’t line up.
English Tests Medical Schools Accept
- Italy: entry is through the IMAT exam in English, and from 2026/27 universities check a recognised English certificate at B2 level at pre-enrolment
- Hungary: universities run their own entrance exams, including English
- Cyprus: a national minimum of around IELTS 5.0 or PTE Academic 58 applies to non-EU students; MOI letters and Duolingo are not on the official list
- China and Central Asia: requirements vary by university, and PMDC now expects a host-country language course
Strong IELTS or PTE scores make every option easier. Our IELTS preparation in Multan helps students reach the score they need.
Low IELTS Score? Foundation and Preparatory Routes
Below the required score, MBBS abroad for Pakistani students is still possible through official routes. Cyprus runs accredited English Language Foundation Programmes for non-EU students from around IELTS 4.0 or PTE Academic 43, lasting about a year. Hungarian universities such as Szeged offer a preparatory or foundation year before Medicine. Which route fits your score is part of your free profile assessment.
5 Mistakes That Can Block Your Pakistani Medical Licence
Most failed plans for MBBS abroad for Pakistani students fail on rules, not on talent. These five mistakes can mean no licence in Pakistan after six years of study. We name each risk here; avoiding it in your own case is covered in your free profile assessment.
1. Choosing a University That Isn’t on PMDC’s List
The list has changed more than once, and graduates of unrecognised colleges have struggled to get licensed. An agent’s “PMDC approved” claim is not proof.
2. Leaving Before MDCAT and PMDC Registration
Under the 2026 rules, students who skip MDCAT or PMDC registration risk not being allowed to sit the NRE.
3. Trusting “Shortcut” Programmes
Programmes shorter than five years, or with “flexible” attendance, can fail PMDC’s hours and attendance conditions.
4. Ignoring the Licensing Exam From Day One
Every foreign graduate now needs to pass the NRE. Colleges with weak clinical training leave students unprepared for it.
5. Picking a Country on Fees Alone
Low fees can hide extra years, local-language clinical training or poor hospital access.

Scholarships for MBBS Abroad
Fully funded scholarships for MBBS abroad for Pakistani students are rare, because Medicine is expensive to teach. Most families plan a self-funded budget. The main savings come from Italy’s income-based fees and regional study grants, plus merit discounts at some private universities in Europe and Asia.
See current options on our scholarship finder, and read how Italy’s grants work in our guide to studying in Italy.
After MBBS: Licensing in Pakistan and Abroad
After graduating, MBBS abroad for Pakistani students leads to two main paths: return and pass PMDC’s NRE to practise in Pakistan, or take another country’s licensing route. Both need planning from the first year, because clinical training quality and English level decide how ready you are.
Doctors aiming for the UK or other English-speaking health systems usually need a high IELTS score or OET. Our OET preparation is built for doctors and nurses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is MDCAT required for MBBS abroad?
Yes. Under PMDC’s 2026 rules, MBBS abroad for Pakistani students requires at least 50% in MDCAT taken in Pakistan (or an equivalent test under PMDC policy), plus at least 60% in FSc Pre-Medical and online registration with PMDC before leaving.
Which countries are best for MBBS abroad for Pakistani students?
Popular choices are China, Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian countries for lower costs, and Hungary, Italy, Cyprus and Türkiye for European degrees. The best country depends on your marks, budget and whether you want to practise in Pakistan or abroad.
Is MBBS from China valid in Pakistan?
It can be, but only from universities on PMDC’s recognised list, and every foreign graduate must pass PMDC’s National Registration Examination to practise in Pakistan. The list has changed before, so recognition should be checked before admission.
What is the cheapest country for MBBS abroad?
Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian countries usually have the lowest tuition, followed by China. Italy’s public universities also have low fees, but entry through the IMAT exam is very competitive. Low fees should never be the only reason to choose.
Can I do MBBS abroad without IELTS?
In many Asian countries, yes, depending on the university. In Europe, English proof is usually needed — for example, Cyprus sets a national minimum of around IELTS 5.0 and does not accept MOI letters or Duolingo, while Italy checks a B2 English certificate.
Do foreign medical graduates need to pass an exam in Pakistan?
Yes. All foreign medical graduates must pass PMDC’s National Registration Examination (NRE) to get a licence to practise in Pakistan. Graduates who don’t meet PMDC’s conditions may not be eligible to sit it.
