Australia student visa requirements changed again in 2026, and Pakistani families need to know before paying any deposit. The visa charge went up on 1 July, refusals reached a ten-year high, and new rules from 2 October 2026 stop most students from bringing a spouse or children.
Australia is still one of the best places in the world to study, work and build a career. But the Australia student visa requirements now punish small mistakes that used to pass.
This guide explains the Australia student visa requirements for Pakistani students in plain words: public vs private routes, universities by city, realistic costs, what changed this year, and four red flags that sink files. Why Study in Australia from Pakistan (2026–27)
Australia offers world-ranked universities, English-taught degrees in every field, the right to work part-time during term, and a post-study work visa after graduation. For Pakistani students who meet the Australia student visa requirements, it remains one of the strongest study-to-career routes in the world today.
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide all have large Pakistani communities, halal food and active part-time job markets. Compare cities and programmes on our study in Australia from Pakistan page.
The door is open: Australia kept its 2027 planning level for new international students at 295,000, the same as 2026. You can read about courses and student life on the government’s official Study Australia website.
Public Universities vs Private Providers in Australia
Almost all of Australia’s well-known universities are public, research-based and ranked worldwide. Private providers include a few private universities and many smaller colleges. Both can work under the Australia student visa requirements, but some private colleges face heavier visa checks, so choosing a provider is also a visa decision.
Public Universities
- Most ranked universities, including the Group of Eight
- Higher entry standards and often higher English scores
- Main intakes in February and July, with some November starts
Private Universities and Colleges
- Private universities such as Bond University and Torrens University
- Smaller colleges offering diplomas and vocational courses
- Easier entry, but files linked to some colleges are checked far more closely

Australia Student Visa Requirements for Pakistani Students: Overview
The Australia student visa requirements centre on the Student visa (Subclass 500). You need a confirmed university enrolment, proof that you are a genuine student, enough funds, an accepted English test, health cover, and good health and character. Officers assess everything together, so one weak area can refuse the file.
The Subclass 500 lets you study full-time for the length of your course and work part-time. Pakistani files are assessed closely: Australia’s overall student visa refusal rate reached 24.2% in June 2026, a ten-year high, and industry reports put refusals for Pakistani higher-education applicants at around 37% in early 2026.
Timing matters too. Applications are processed faster until your chosen university fills most of its new-student allocation; after that, processing slows down. Students who apply early for the February and July 2027 intakes give themselves the best chance.
What Changed in 2026
- Higher visa charge: student visa charges rose by 25% on 1 July 2026.
- Family limits (from 2 October 2026): most applicants can no longer include a spouse or children, and family members cannot be added after the visa is granted. Only a few groups, such as PhD students and government-scholarship holders, are exempt.
- Fewer onshore switches: many people already in Australia on other visas must now apply from outside the country.
These changes make the Australia student visa requirements tougher for married postgraduate applicants from Pakistan — plan before you apply, not after.
English Tests and the Australia Student Visa Requirements
Home Affairs accepts a fixed list of tests, including IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT (booked for Australia) and LanguageCert Academic. Duolingo and fully online, at-home tests are not accepted for the visa, even if a university accepts them for admission. Many universities also ask for a higher score than the visa minimum.
Low IELTS Score? Packaged English and Foundation Routes
A score below 6.0 does not always end your Australia plan. Under the Australia student visa requirements, Home Affairs sets lower minimums when your degree is packaged with an English course or an approved foundation or pathway programme:
| Your IELTS overall (or equivalent) | Visa route |
|---|---|
| 6.0 | Direct entry to your degree |
| 5.5 | Degree packaged with at least 10 weeks of English (ELICOS), or an eligible university foundation / pathway programme |
| 5.0 | Degree packaged with at least 20 weeks of English (ELICOS) |
Each university decides whether it offers a package for your course and what score it needs, and the Genuine Student assessment still applies. Below 5.0, the safest move is to raise your score first with IELTS preparation in Multan or PTE Academic coaching. Other countries have different low-score and no-IELTS routes — see our guide to studying in Europe without IELTS. Which route fits your exact score is part of your free profile assessment.
Red Flags That Sink Pakistani Files for Australia
Most refusals we see are not about weak students. They are about files that don’t add up. Under the current Australia student visa requirements, Home Affairs checks whether your course, money, English and plans tell one believable story. These four red flags cause the most refusals.
1. A Course That Doesn’t Match Your Background
A business graduate switching to an unrelated diploma, or a Master’s that repeats one you already hold, fails the Genuine Student assessment. The refusal then stays on your record for every future visa.
2. Funds You Can’t Explain
Large sudden deposits, borrowed money parked for a few weeks, or income that doesn’t match tax records raise red flags. Showing the right amount is not enough — where the money came from matters just as much.
3. Taking a Test Home Affairs Won’t Accept
Some universities accept Duolingo or an at-home test for admission, but these don’t meet the Australia student visa requirements. Students get an offer, discover they must resit, and miss the intake.
4. Planning to Bring Your Family Later
Since 2 October 2026, most students cannot add a spouse or children after the visa is granted. Married applicants who plan “visa first, family later” may stay separated for the whole course.
Every one of these has a solution, but the right one depends on your profile. Worried your file shows one of these red flags? Book your Free Profile Assessment or message us on WhatsApp before you apply.
Cost to Study in Australia for Pakistani Students
Australia is a premium destination. Tuition depends on the university, city and subject, and living costs vary sharply between Sydney and smaller cities. The ranges below are broad guides only. Meeting the Australia student visa requirements also means proving living funds, health cover and travel costs on top of tuition.
| Expense | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Bachelor’s tuition (per year) | AUD 20,000 – 45,000 |
| Master’s tuition (per year) | AUD 22,000 – 50,000 |
| Medicine & specialist degrees (per year) | AUD 60,000 – 95,000+ |
| Living costs (per month) | AUD 2,000 – 3,000+ by city |
| Visa charge + health cover (OSHC) | Both rose recently — included in your exact budget |
Home Affairs also sets a minimum living-cost figure that your funds must cover, and it changes over time. Want your exact budget in PKR? Get your free profile assessment or try our study abroad cost calculator.

Scholarships in Australia
Fully funded scholarships for Pakistani students are limited in Australia, so most of our students are self-funded. Universities do offer merit scholarships that reduce tuition, and research students can win larger awards. A scholarship helps, but it doesn’t remove the financial part of the Australia student visa requirements.
- University international merit scholarships (partial tuition reductions)
- Destination Australia (for study in regional areas)
- Research Training Program (RTP) for research degrees

Work Rights and Post-Study Options in Australia
Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while classes are running and unlimited hours during official breaks. After graduation, many students qualify for the Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485), which lets them stay and gain Australian work experience for several years.
The Post-Higher Education Work stream generally gives around two years after a Bachelor’s or coursework Master’s, and longer after a PhD; regional study can add more. The age limit is 35, and you must apply from inside Australia. Working over your hours breaks the Australia student visa requirements and can cancel your visa, so stay inside the limit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Australia student visa requirements for Pakistani students?
The main Australia student visa requirements are a confirmed university enrolment, passing the Genuine Student assessment, proof of funds, an accepted English test, health cover (OSHC), and health and character checks. All parts are assessed together, so the whole file must be consistent.
How much bank balance is required for an Australia student visa from Pakistan?
You must show funds for your first year of tuition, a minimum living-cost amount set by Home Affairs, travel and health cover. The amount changes over time, and officers also check where the money came from. Get your exact figure in PKR in a free profile assessment.
Can I study in Australia with IELTS 5.5 or 5.0?
Yes, through packaged routes. Under the Australia student visa requirements, IELTS 5.5 can work if your degree is packaged with at least 10 weeks of English (ELICOS) or an eligible foundation or pathway programme, and 5.0 with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS. Each university sets its own package rules.
Is a study gap accepted for an Australian student visa?
There is no fixed gap limit, but every gap must be explained with evidence such as work experience. An unexplained gap weakens your Genuine Student assessment and is a common reason Pakistani files are refused.
How long does an Australia student visa take from Pakistan?
Processing times change and are published by Home Affairs. Files are processed faster while your chosen university is below its new-student allocation, so applying early for the February or July intake gives you the best chance.
Can I take my spouse to Australia on a student visa?
From 2 October 2026, most student visa applicants cannot include a spouse or children, and family members cannot be added after the visa is granted. Only some groups, such as PhD students and government-scholarship holders, are exempt.
How many hours can I work in Australia as a student?
You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session and unlimited hours during official breaks. Working more than the limit can lead to visa cancellation.
Is Duolingo accepted for the Australian student visa?
No. Duolingo and fully online, at-home tests are not accepted under the Australia student visa requirements, even if a university accepts them for admission. Choose IELTS, PTE, TOEFL iBT or LanguageCert Academic instead.
