IELTS reading tips usually start and end with “use skimming and scanning”. That advice is right, but those IELTS reading tips are only half the story. Most Pakistani students at Reading 6.0 do not lose marks because they read slowly — they lose them on True False Not Given, matching headings and the clock. Our IELTS reading practice online helps students in Multan, across Pakistan and in the Gulf fix all three.
IELTS Reading gives you 60 minutes for 40 questions and three long texts, with no extra time to transfer answers. Skim too fast and you miss the detail, which is why skimming and scanning need control; read every word and you never reach Passage 3. Students from Lahore, Faisalabad and across Pakistan start with us online. Stuck at Reading 6.0 or 6.5? Get your Free Profile Assessment — it takes one message.
IELTS Reading Format in 2026: 60 Minutes, 40 Questions
IELTS Reading has three sections, 40 questions and exactly 60 minutes, with no extra time to transfer answers. Since mid-2026, IELTS in Pakistan is taken on computer only, so you read on screen and can highlight text. The best IELTS reading tips are built around this tight hour.
| Feature | IELTS Reading |
|---|---|
| Sections | 3 (one long text each in Academic) |
| Questions | 40, one mark each |
| Time | 60 minutes, no extra transfer time |
| Delivery in Pakistan | On computer, with highlighting |
| Wrong answers | No negative marking — a blank scores zero |
| Academic vs General Training | Different texts, same time and question count |
The official IELTS Academic Reading format lists the texts and all the question types, from multiple choice to True False Not Given and matching headings.

Academic, General Training and UKVI Reading
Good IELTS reading tips start with knowing your version. IELTS Academic Reading uses three long texts from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. IELTS General Training Reading starts with short notices and workplace texts, then builds to one longer text. IELTS for UKVI has the same content as the normal test and is used for certain UK visa routes. These IELTS reading tips apply to all three, but the scoring is different — as the next section shows.
IELTS Reading Band Score: How Many Answers You Need
Before any IELTS reading tips, know the maths: your IELTS reading band score depends on how many of the 40 questions you answer correctly, and the conversion is different for Academic and General Training. On average, Academic needs about 30 correct answers for band 7, while General Training needs about 34 for the same band.
| Band | Academic (correct out of 40) | General Training (correct out of 40) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 23 | 30 |
| 7 | 30 | 34 |
| 8 | 35 | 38 |
These are the average figures IELTS publishes; the exact conversion can shift slightly from test to test. Two IELTS reading tips follow. First, General Training Reading is not the easy option many students think — the texts feel simpler, but you need more correct answers. Second, because there is no negative marking, every blank answer is a mark thrown away. That is why time management sits at the centre of good IELTS reading tips.
Skimming and Scanning: What They Are and When They Work
Skimming and scanning are two fast-reading skills that save time in IELTS Reading. Skimming means reading quickly for the main idea of a text or paragraph; scanning means searching for one specific detail, such as a name, number or date. Both are useful IELTS reading tips, but neither answers every question type.
Skimming: Reading for the Main Idea
Of all skimming and scanning skills, skimming helps you understand what each paragraph is about before you answer questions. It is useful for matching headings and for knowing where to look later. Skimming too fast, though, leaves you with a vague picture and leads to wrong heading choices.
Scanning: Finding the Detail
One of the classic IELTS reading tips, scanning helps you find names, numbers, dates and key words quickly — useful for sentence completion, summary completion and short answers. The trap: the question often uses a synonym, so scanning for the exact word can miss the answer completely.
When Skimming and Scanning Fail
True False Not Given, Yes No Not Given and many multiple-choice questions need careful, detailed reading of one or two sentences. Students who follow only skimming and scanning IELTS reading tips here make fast, confident mistakes. Knowing when to switch from speed to detail is one of the most valuable IELTS reading tips — and the hardest to learn from videos alone.
IELTS Reading Tips for True False Not Given and Other Question Types
True False Not Given is the question type that costs Pakistani students the most Reading marks. “False” means the text says the opposite; “Not Given” means the text does not say it at all. Confusing the two, or using outside knowledge, quietly lowers your IELTS reading band score in every test.
| Question type | What it really tests | Common trap |
|---|---|---|
| True False Not Given | Exact meaning of facts in the text | Mixing up False and Not Given |
| Yes No Not Given | The writer’s views or claims | Answering from your own opinion |
| Matching headings | The main idea of each paragraph | Matching a single word, not the idea |
| Sentence / summary completion | Detail and word limits | Wrong form of the word, too many words |
| Multiple choice | Detailed understanding | Choosing an option that is true but not the answer |
Each type needs its own method, and generic IELTS reading tips rarely cover them. The step-by-step methods we teach for True False Not Given and matching headings, and the timing plan for each passage, are part of our IELTS course — practised with feedback on every wrong answer.
Why Your Reading Score Won’t Move: 5 Time-Wasting Mistakes
These five mistakes keep students at Reading 6.0, whatever IELTS reading tips they follow. Each one wastes time or marks, and together they explain why many students never finish Passage 3. We name the mistakes here; the fix for your own pattern is worked out in class and in your free assessment.
1. Reading Every Word of Every Passage
Students ignore skimming and scanning and read the whole text carefully before looking at the questions. By the time they reach Passage 3, only a few minutes are left.
2. Spending Too Long on One Passage
Passage 1 feels easy, so students forget basic IELTS reading tips, polish every answer and spend 25 minutes there. The hardest questions, in Passage 3, then get the least time.
3. Confusing False and Not Given
This one mistake can cost several marks in a single test. Students who answer from what they believe, not what the text says, get it wrong with full confidence.
4. Ignoring Word Limits and Spelling
A correct answer with too many words, or spelled wrongly, scores zero. On computer, typing slips add to the risk.
5. Leaving Questions Blank
There is no negative marking, yet many students leave questions empty when time runs out — one of the simplest IELTS reading tips is to answer everything. Each blank is a lost chance at a mark, and IELTS reading practice online under real timing builds the habit of finishing.

What Reading Band Do You Need? Targets by Country
The Reading band you need depends on your country, university and course. Many universities set an overall score and a minimum in each skill, and competitive programmes such as medicine ask for more. Reading is often one of the quickest skills to raise with the right IELTS reading tips and skimming and scanning practice.
- Italy and France: English-taught degrees usually accept IELTS, and each university sets its own minimum. Read our guides to studying in Italy as a Pakistani student and studying in France as a Pakistani student, or see the pages to study in Italy and study in France.
- Sweden: English-taught programmes need proof of English, and IELTS is commonly accepted. See our Sweden guide for Pakistani students and the page to study in Sweden.
- Medicine abroad: many medical universities set their own English minimums, often higher than other courses. Our MBBS abroad for Pakistani students blog explains the options, including the page to study in Hungary.
Your exact minimum for each skill is checked in your free profile assessment, before you start IELTS reading practice online.
Low Reading Score? Official Routes That Still Work
A low Reading band does not always end your plan. IELTS on computer offers One Skill Retake, and some countries have official lower-score routes through English, foundation or pathway courses. The right route depends on your country, your course level and how far you are from your target IELTS reading band score.
- One Skill Retake: on computer-delivered IELTS, you can retake one skill — such as Reading — within 60 days of your original test, instead of the whole test.
- UK: courses below degree level, such as foundation and many pathway programmes, need English at CEFR B1 through a Secure English Language Test — for example IELTS for UKVI 4.0 in each skill. See how to study in the UK.
- Australia: for tests taken from 7 August 2025, the student visa minimum is IELTS 6.0; with at least 10 weeks of English (ELICOS), a foundation or an eligible pathway, it is 5.5; with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, it is 5.0. See how to study in Australia.
These routes add time and cost, so they need careful planning. Our IELTS guide gives a first look at band requirements; your best route is part of your free assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best IELTS reading tips for band 7?
The most useful IELTS reading tips for band 7 are to manage your time across all three passages, use skimming and scanning where they fit, read carefully for True False Not Given, follow word limits and never leave a question blank.
What is skimming and scanning in IELTS?
Skimming and scanning are fast-reading skills. Skimming means reading quickly for the main idea; scanning means searching for a specific detail such as a name, number or key word. Neither replaces careful reading for every question, so IELTS reading practice online with feedback helps you learn when to switch.
What is the difference between False and Not Given?
In True False Not Given questions, “False” means the text says the opposite of the statement, while “Not Given” means the text does not give that information at all. Mixing them up is one of the most common Reading mistakes, and it lowers your IELTS reading band score quickly.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in IELTS Reading?
On average, about 30 correct answers out of 40 give band 7 in Academic Reading, while General Training needs about 34. Your IELTS reading band score is converted from your correct answers.
Is there extra time to transfer answers in IELTS Reading?
No. You have 60 minutes for the whole Reading test with no extra transfer time. On the computer-delivered test, you type answers directly, so all your time management happens inside the hour.
Is IELTS General Training Reading easier than Academic?
The texts feel easier, so many IELTS reading tips treat it as simpler, but General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band — about 34 for band 7 compared with about 30 in Academic.
Is IELTS reading coaching available online?
Yes. LingoLab turns IELTS reading tips into IELTS reading practice online with a live teacher, on-screen practice, question-type training and full computer mock tests, plus on-campus classes in Multan.
Can I join online IELTS classes from Dubai, Saudi Arabia or Qatar?
Yes. Pakistanis in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Doha and Muscat join our IELTS reading practice online, with evening and weekend batches that suit Gulf time.
