PTE Core vs PTE Academic is a choice that looks small but can cost you a full intake or a Canada PR draw if you get it wrong. PTE Core for Canada is a migration test, while PTE Academic is for university study and most other visas. Our online PTE classes help students and workers in Multan, across Pakistan and in the Gulf prepare for the right one.
In the PTE Core vs PTE Academic decision, both tests come from Pearson, both use the same 10–90 score scale and both are taken on a computer at a test centre. But the content is different and the countries that accept them are different. Students from Lahore, Faisalabad and across Pakistan start with us online. Not sure which PTE your plan needs? PTE Core vs PTE Academic: The Quick Answer
In the PTE Core vs PTE Academic choice, the rule is simple: PTE Academic is for university admission and for Australia, New Zealand and UK visas, while PTE Core is for Canadian immigration through IRCC. They are separate tests, so one score cannot be used for the other.
| Feature | PTE Academic | PTE Core |
|---|---|---|
| Main use | University study + AU, NZ, UK visas | Canada immigration (IRCC) |
| Content | Academic English | Everyday and workplace English |
| University admission | Yes, worldwide | No |
| Canada PR / Express Entry | No | Yes |
| UK visa | Through PTE Academic UKVI | No |
| Score scale | 10–90 | 10–90 (converted to CLB) |
| Where you take it | Test centre, on computer | Test centre, on computer |
Pearson’s own guide to choosing a PTE test confirms this split between study and Canadian migration.
What Is PTE Academic, and Who Needs It?
PTE Academic is Pearson’s academic English test for university admission. Universities worldwide accept it, and so do the Australian and New Zealand visa systems. On the PTE Core vs PTE Academic question, it is the right test for almost every student going abroad to study.
Here is where PTE Academic works for students from Pakistan — the study side of PTE Core vs PTE Academic:
- Australia: accepted for the student visa and other visas. See how to study in Australia and our Australia student visa requirements blog.
- New Zealand: accepted for study and many work visas. Read our New Zealand student visa from Pakistan blog and explore options to study in New Zealand.
- Canada (study only): most colleges and universities accept PTE Academic for admission. It is not accepted for Canada PR or the PGWP.
- USA and Europe: widely accepted for admission. See our page to study in the USA.
PTE Academic UKVI for the UK
PTE Academic UKVI has the same content as PTE Academic, but it is taken under Secure English Language Test (SELT) conditions and gives a reference number for UK visas. UK courses below degree level need it at CEFR B1; degree-level universities set their own rules. Explore options to study in the UK, and read our UK study visa requirements blog for the wider visa file.
What Changed in PTE Academic in 2025
In August 2025, PTE Academic added two new speaking tasks and stronger human review of answers that sound memorised. Students using old templates now risk lower scores, whichever side of PTE Core vs PTE Academic they choose. This matters for PTE Academic UKVI too, because it shares the same content.
What Is PTE Core for Canada?
PTE Core for Canada is Pearson’s general English test for Canadian immigration. IRCC accepts it for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, many work permits and citizenship. It tests everyday and workplace English, not academic English, and universities do not accept it for admission.
Your PTE Core for Canada score is converted to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, which decide points in Express Entry. That is why the PTE Core vs PTE Academic choice matters so much for anyone planning Canadian PR.
PTE Core for Canada After Graduation: The PGWP Rule
For PTE Core for Canada after graduation, timing matters. Since November 2024, most Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) applicants must show English through an IRCC-approved test: CLB 7 for university graduates and CLB 5 for college graduates. PTE Core for Canada is accepted for this; PTE Academic is not. This is where PTE Core vs PTE Academic matters most after study. Our Canada PGWP rules blog explains the wider rules, and you can explore options to study in Canada.
So for Canada, PTE Core vs PTE Academic is not either-or. A Pakistani student in Canada often needs two tests at two different times: PTE Academic for admission, then PTE Core (or another IRCC test) for the PGWP and PR.
PTE Core vs PTE Academic: Which Is Easier?
Many students ask which side of PTE Core vs PTE Academic is easier. PTE Core uses everyday topics, so some students find its content more familiar. But “easier” is the wrong question: the test must match your purpose, or even a perfect score is useless for your application.
On the task level, PTE Core vs PTE Academic differs too. PTE Core has some different tasks, such as writing an email and responding to everyday situations, while PTE Academic uses academic lectures, essays and longer texts. Both are scored by AI with human review, and both reward clear speaking and accurate writing more than tricks.
PTE Core vs PTE Academic vs IELTS and Other English Tests
The PTE Core vs PTE Academic choice is one of several. IELTS Academic works for study almost everywhere, IELTS General Training competes with PTE Core for Canadian migration, and CELPIP is another Canada-only test. Choosing between them depends on your country, your purpose and which format suits your skills.
| Test | Best fit |
|---|---|
| PTE Academic | Study worldwide; Australia and NZ visas |
| PTE Academic UKVI | UK visa routes |
| PTE Core | Canada PR, PGWP, work permits |
| IELTS Academic / IELTS for UKVI | Study worldwide; UK visa routes |
| IELTS General Training | Canada and Australia migration |
| CELPIP General | Canada immigration only |
| Duolingo English Test | Admission only in many countries |
5 PTE Mistakes That Cost Pakistani Students an Intake
These five mistakes come up every month with the PTE Core vs PTE Academic decision. Each can cost a test fee, a lost Express Entry draw or a full intake. We name the problem here; the fix for your profile is planned in class and in your free assessment.
1. Booking PTE Academic for Canada PR
This is the costliest PTE Core vs PTE Academic mistake. A strong PTE Academic score cannot be used for Express Entry. Students and workers learn this only when the IRCC profile asks for an approved test.
2. Booking PTE Core for University Admission
The opposite mistake: a student takes PTE Core for Canada migration practice, then applies to a college that only accepts PTE Academic for admission.
3. Taking the Normal PTE Academic for a UK Visa That Needs a SELT
UK courses below degree level need PTE Academic UKVI. The normal version is the same test, but it gives no SELT reference number.
4. Planning Study and PR on One Test
PTE scores are valid for two years, and Canada needs a different test after study anyway. One test rarely covers both stages, so PTE Core for Canada usually comes later, after graduation.
5. Preparing With Old Templates
Since August 2025, answers that sound memorised get extra human review. Template-based practice can now pull your score down.

Low PTE Score? Official Routes That Still Work
A low PTE Academic score does not always end your study plan. The UK and Australia have official lower-score routes through foundation, pathway or English courses, and many Canadian colleges offer conditional admission with English study first. The right route depends on your country and course level.
- UK: courses below degree level, such as foundation and many pathway programmes, need CEFR B1 through a SELT, for example PTE Academic UKVI at B1 or IELTS for UKVI 4.0 in each skill.
- Australia: for tests taken from 7 August 2025, the student visa minimum is IELTS 6.0 or the equivalent PTE Academic score. With at least 10 weeks of English (ELICOS), a foundation or an eligible pathway programme, it is IELTS 5.5. With at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, it is 5.0.
- Canada: many colleges offer an English pathway before the main programme. Rules differ by college.
