Oxford ELLT test is the English test many Pakistani students hear about only after a UK university suggests it — and it can save weeks if it fits your plan. You can take the Oxford ELLT in Pakistan from home, with results usually in 48 hours. Our online Oxford ELLT classes help students in Multan, across Pakistan and in the Gulf prepare for it properly.
The catch: the Oxford ELLT test is an admission test, not a visa test. It can win you a university offer, but it cannot be used where your visa route needs a Secure English Language Test. Students from Lahore, Faisalabad and across Pakistan start with us online. Not sure the ELLT fits your course? Get your Free Profile Assessment — it takes one message.
What Is the Oxford ELLT Test?
The Oxford ELLT test (English Language Level Test) is an online English test run by Oxford International Digital Institute. It checks Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, with a live human examiner for Speaking. Universities use it as proof of English for admission, mostly in the UK.
Here are the facts that matter before you choose the Oxford ELLT test:
| Feature | Oxford ELLT Digital |
|---|---|
| Where you take it | Online, at home |
| Skills | Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking |
| Speaking | Live human examiner by video |
| Results | Usually within 48 hours |
| Score validity | 18 months |
| Faster option | Oxford ELLT Express |
| Main use | University admission, not visas |
The Three Oxford ELLT Versions
Oxford ELLT Digital is the standard 100% online test. Oxford ELLT Express offers faster Speaking slots and quicker results for urgent applications. Oxford ELLT Global is computer-delivered at test centres for universities that prefer centre-based testing. Your university’s offer decides which version of the Oxford ELLT test it accepts.
What the Oxford ELLT Score Shows
Your Oxford ELLT score report shows a result for each skill and an overall level, matched to the international CEFR scale. Students taking the Oxford ELLT in Pakistan should know that each university converts that into its own requirement, often with a minimum in every skill. An overall Oxford ELLT score alone does not prove you meet an offer.
ELLT Accepted Universities: Where the Test Works
ELLT accepted universities are mostly in the UK, with a growing list in Europe, North America and elsewhere. The official Oxford ELLT site says it is accepted by over 250 universities worldwide. Acceptance changes by course and year, so check your offer first.
Here is the honest picture for students taking the Oxford ELLT in Pakistan, country by country:
- UK: most ELLT accepted universities are here, including many modern universities in London, Birmingham, Leeds and Scotland. Some accept it for all degree courses; others only for certain courses or international colleges. Explore options to study in the UK from Pakistan.
- Finland and other European countries: some universities of applied sciences in Finland list the Oxford ELLT among accepted tests. See how to study in Finland and our Finland guide for Pakistani students. Our blog on studying in Europe without IELTS covers other tests European universities use.
- USA and Canada: a small number of colleges and universities accept it. Most still prefer TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo. See our page to study in the USA, our USA student visa from Pakistan blog and options to study in Canada.
- Australia: the Oxford ELLT test is not on the Department of Home Affairs list of tests for the student visa, so plan IELTS or PTE instead. See how to study in Australia.
ELLT accepted universities publish their rules on course pages, and these change often. Matching your Oxford ELLT score to the right university is part of your free profile assessment.
Can the Oxford ELLT Test Be Used for a UK Student Visa?
The Oxford ELLT test is not a Secure English Language Test (SELT) on the UK Home Office list. For degree-level courses, a UK university can assess your English itself and may accept the ELLT for your CAS. Courses below degree level need a SELT instead.
This is the gap that catches students taking the Oxford ELLT test out:
- Degree level and above (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD): the university decides how to check your English. Many ELLT accepted universities use the Oxford ELLT test here.
- Below degree level (foundation, many pathway and pre-degree courses): the Home Office requires a SELT at CEFR B1, such as IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI or the LanguageCert Academic SELT. The ELLT cannot be used.
The Home Office explains the SELT rule on its Secure English Language Test guidance page. Our UK study visa requirements blog explains the wider visa file.
One more point: even when the ELLT is accepted, your English is still tested at the visa stage. UK credibility interviews are held in English, so Speaking practice matters beyond the Oxford ELLT test.
Oxford ELLT vs IELTS, PTE and Other English Tests
The Oxford ELLT test is fast, online and cheaper than most centre-based tests, but it is accepted by fewer universities and by no visa system as a SELT. IELTS and PTE work almost everywhere. The right choice depends on your course level and country.
For the Oxford ELLT in Pakistan, your home internet and power backup matter too.
| Test | Where you take it | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Oxford ELLT | Online, at home | Degree-level admission at ELLT accepted universities |
| IELTS Academic / IELTS for UKVI | Test centre (computer) | Almost every university and visa route |
| PTE Academic / PTE UKVI | Test centre | UK and Australia visa routes |
| LanguageCert Academic SELT | Test centre | UK study visa routes |
| Duolingo English Test | At home, online | Admission in the USA, Canada, Europe |
| TOEFL iBT | Test centre or at home | US universities |
Many students taking the Oxford ELLT in Pakistan like its speed: book, test from home and get results in about two days. That speed only helps if the university and course accept it.
3 Oxford ELLT Mistakes That Waste an Intake
These three mistakes come up every intake with the Oxford ELLT test. Each can cost a test fee, a lost CAS date or a full intake. We name the problem here; the fix for your profile is planned in class and in your free assessment.
1. Using the ELLT for a Course That Needs a SELT
A student takes the Oxford ELLT test, gets an offer for a foundation or pathway course, then learns the visa needs a SELT. The score is valid for admission, but not for that visa route.
2. Assuming Every Course Accepts It
Some ELLT accepted universities take it only for certain courses, intakes or international colleges, and minimum scores differ. Students taking the Oxford ELLT in Pakistan often learn this after the test.
3. Breaking the Home Test Rules
The Oxford ELLT test is watched remotely. Background noise, a second person in the room, a weak connection or a power cut can stop your result. For students taking the Oxford ELLT in Pakistan, load-shedding and internet speed are real risks.
Recognise yourself in any of these? Book your free profile assessment or message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether the ELLT fits your course.
Low Oxford ELLT Score? Official Routes That Still Work
A low Oxford ELLT score does not always end your plan. Many ELLT accepted universities offer a pre-sessional English course with a conditional offer, and the UK and Australia have official lower-score routes through foundation, pathway or English courses. The right route depends on your course level and country.
- UK pre-sessional English: some universities accept a lower ELLT result plus a pre-sessional course before your degree. Rules differ by university, so plan this before you book the Oxford ELLT test.
- UK foundation and pathway courses: these are below degree level, so they need CEFR B1 through a SELT, for example IELTS for UKVI 4.0 in each skill. The Oxford ELLT test cannot be used here.
- Australia: for tests taken from 7 August 2025, the student visa minimum is IELTS 6.0. With at least 10 weeks of English (ELICOS), a foundation or an eligible pathway programme, it is 5.5. With at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, it is 5.0.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Oxford ELLT accepted for a UK student visa?
The Oxford ELLT test is not a UK Secure English Language Test. For degree-level courses, a UK university can assess your English itself and may accept the ELLT for your CAS. Foundation and other below-degree courses need a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI.
Can I take the Oxford ELLT in Pakistan from home?
Yes. The Oxford ELLT in Pakistan is taken online at home on a computer with a webcam and stable internet, with a live examiner for Speaking. Results usually arrive within 48 hours.
Which are the ELLT accepted universities in the UK?
ELLT accepted universities include many modern UK universities and international colleges, and the official site lists over 250 universities worldwide. Acceptance changes by course and year, so check your exact offer or ask LingoLab before booking the Oxford ELLT test.
What Oxford ELLT score do I need?
There is no single pass mark. Each university sets its own Oxford ELLT score, usually by CEFR level, often with a minimum in every skill. Postgraduate courses usually ask for more than undergraduate ones.
Is the Oxford ELLT easier than IELTS?
Not for everyone. Students like its speed and home format, but the skills tested are similar and the Speaking test is with a live examiner. The bigger question is whether your university accepts it.
How long is the Oxford ELLT score valid?
An Oxford ELLT result is valid for 18 months from the date it was issued. Check that it will still be valid when your university issues your CAS.
