PTE vs IELTS is the first decision most Pakistani students face before a study visa, and the usual question is simple: PTE or IELTS — which is easier? The honest answer is that neither test is easier for everyone. PTE Academic suits some students and IELTS suits others, and picking the wrong one can cost you a second test fee and a missed intake.
Both tests changed recently, so old PTE vs IELTS advice from friends no longer applies. Students from Lahore, Faisalabad and across Pakistan start with us online. Not sure which test fits your profile? Get your Free Profile Assessment — it takes one message.
PTE vs IELTS: The Quick Difference
The quick PTE vs IELTS difference is how each test works, not how hard it is. PTE Academic is fully computer-based and mostly machine-scored, with results in about two days. IELTS is now also on computer in Pakistan, but your Speaking test is a live conversation with a human examiner.
| PTE Academic | IELTS Academic | |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Computer, test centre | Computer, test centre |
| Speaking | Into a microphone | Face-to-face with an examiner |
| Scoring | AI scoring with human review | Human examiners for Speaking and Writing |
| Score scale | 10–90 | Band 0–9 |
| Results | Usually within 2 days | Usually within a few days |
| Typical validity | 2 years | 2 years |
The biggest practical PTE vs IELTS difference is the Speaking test. In IELTS you talk to a person who can see you, ask follow-up questions and react. In PTE Academic you speak to a computer with a timer, and silence or hesitation is marked straight away.
Writing is different too. PTE Academic mixes skills, so one task can count towards both speaking and listening. IELTS marks each of its four sections separately, which makes your weak skill easier to spot — and harder to hide.

What Changed in PTE vs IELTS for 2026–27
The PTE vs IELTS comparison changed in the last year because both tests were updated. IELTS in Pakistan moved to computer-only delivery in 2026, and PTE Academic added new speaking tasks with human checks in August 2025. Advice from two years ago can now send you to the wrong test.
IELTS Is Now Computer-Only
The IELTS partners ended paper-based IELTS from mid-2026, and Pakistan moved to computer delivery earlier in 2026. You now read, listen and type your answers on screen. Speaking stays with a real examiner, so in the PTE vs IELTS choice both tests now need computer comfort. Computer delivery also gives you One Skill Retake, so you can retake one weak section instead of the full test.
PTE Academic Added Tasks and Human Review
Since 7 August 2025, PTE Academic includes two new speaking tasks — Respond to a Situation and Summarise Group Discussion — and the test runs a little longer. Human reviewers now check selected speaking and writing answers, mainly to catch memorised templates.
That second change matters most for Pakistani students. For years, many academies sold PTE as “templates and tricks”. Template-heavy answers are now flagged, so PTE Academic rewards real English much more than before, which narrows the PTE vs IELTS gap.
Which Version Do You Need? IELTS Academic, General Training, Online and PTE Types
Choosing PTE vs IELTS is only half the decision, because each test comes in several versions. IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Online serve different purposes, and so do PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core. Booking the wrong version is costly.
| Test version | Who it is for |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | University admission abroad (most study students) |
| IELTS General Training | Work, migration and some below-degree courses |
| IELTS for UKVI (Academic or GT) | UK visas that need a Secure English Language Test |
| IELTS Online (at home) | Some universities only — not accepted for many visas |
| PTE Academic | University admission and visas in Australia, NZ and more |
| PTE Academic UKVI | UK visas that need a Secure English Language Test |
| PTE Core | Mainly Canadian immigration, not usual for university entry |
IELTS Academic vs General Training
Most students going abroad for a degree need IELTS Academic, because universities judge academic reading and writing. IELTS General Training uses everyday and workplace topics and suits work or migration routes. Students sometimes book GT because it feels easier, then find their university will not accept it. The PTE vs IELTS choice works the same way: match the version to your goal first.
Is IELTS Online Accepted?
IELTS Online lets you take the test at home, which sounds convenient. But many universities and visa authorities do not accept at-home tests — Australia’s student visa, for example, accepts only tests taken at a secure centre. Check acceptance before booking, or you may pay for a score you cannot use.
Other Tests: TOEFL, Duolingo, LanguageCert and Oxford ELLT
PTE or IELTS are not the only options. TOEFL iBT is widely accepted, especially in the USA. The Duolingo English Test is cheaper and online, but many visas, including Australia’s, do not accept it. LanguageCert has a UK-approved SELT version, and Oxford ELLT is accepted by a growing number of UK universities for admission. Each fits a specific plan, which we match in your assessment.
PTE or IELTS: Which Is Easier for Pakistani Students?
PTE or IELTS is easier depending on your skills, not on rumours. Students who type fast, stay calm under a timer and speak clearly to a microphone often find PTE Academic smoother. Students who explain ideas well in conversation and write organised essays by hand or keyboard often prefer IELTS.
Here are the signs we look for when students ask us PTE vs IELTS:
- PTE Academic may suit you if you are comfortable on a computer, type quickly, speak with steady pace and like fast results.
- IELTS may suit you if you speak better to a person than to a machine, need time to think and think in full arguments.
- Either test may struggle if your grammar, vocabulary or listening is weak — no format can hide a low level for long.
Accent is a common worry. PTE scores clear, steady pronunciation, not a British or American accent, while IELTS examiners judge how easy you are to understand. Either way, unclear speech costs marks.
So the real PTE vs IELTS answer is personal. We test students on both formats in a free level check, then recommend the one that fits — often saving one full test fee.
Where PTE vs IELTS Scores Are Accepted
PTE vs IELTS acceptance is very similar for the main study countries. The UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and the USA all have universities that accept both tests. The catch is the version and the score: the visa, the university and the course can each have their own rules.
- UK: for a Student visa that needs a Secure English Language Test, you must book the UKVI version — IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI — at an approved centre. The UK government explains how Secure English Language Tests work. Our UK study visa requirements guide covers the wider visa picture, and you can explore UK universities for Pakistani students.
- Australia: both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are accepted for the student visa, but the Duolingo English Test is not. Our Australia student visa requirements blog and our page to study in Australia explain the bigger picture.
- New Zealand: both are widely accepted. See our New Zealand student visa from Pakistan guide and our page to study in New Zealand.
- Canada and the USA: most universities accept both, but some programmes list only certain tests. Compare options to study in Canada or to study in the USA.
- Europe: many universities accept PTE or IELTS, and some accept other proof. Our blog on studying in Europe without IELTS shows where that works.
Universities also set section-wise minimums, not just an overall score. The PTE vs IELTS rules your target university and visa follow are checked in your free profile assessment before you pay any test fee.
5 Costly Mistakes When Choosing PTE or IELTS
These five mistakes come up again and again when Pakistani students choose between PTE or IELTS. Each one costs money, time or an intake. We name the problem here; the exact fix for your profile is what we plan with you in class and in your assessment.
1. Booking the Wrong Version of the Test
Standard IELTS or standard PTE Academic is not the same as the UKVI version. Students book the cheaper or quicker one, get a good score and then learn it cannot be used for their UK file.
2. Choosing PTE for “Templates”
Many students still pick PTE Academic because someone promised memorised templates. Since the 2025 update, human reviewers check for templated answers, and students who relied on them are losing marks.
3. Switching Tests After Every Low Score
Moving from IELTS to PTE to another test after each result rarely fixes the real weakness. It only adds fees and months, and the same skill gap follows you to the new test. Changing PTE vs IELTS again and again is not a study plan.
4. Ignoring Section-Wise Minimums
A strong overall score with one weak section can still fail a university or visa requirement. Students who check only the overall number find out too late.
5. Thinking the Score Finishes Your English Work
A score gets your file accepted, but a UK credibility interview is held in English without an interpreter, and weak speaking can lead to refusal. Lectures and part-time jobs abroad need real English, not just a certificate.

Low PTE or IELTS Score? Official Routes for Study Abroad
A low PTE or IELTS score does not always end your study plan, but it changes the route. Several countries offer official lower-score routes through English courses, foundation or pathway programmes packaged with your degree. The entry scores below come from official visa rules, and universities can ask for more.
- UK: courses below degree level, such as foundation and many pathway programmes, need English at CEFR B1 for the Student visa — IELTS for UKVI 4.0 in each skill, or the PTE Academic UKVI equivalent. Degree-level study needs B2, and universities set their own higher scores.
- Australia: for tests taken from 7 August 2025, the student visa minimum is IELTS 6.0 or PTE Academic 47. With at least 10 weeks of English (ELICOS), a foundation or an eligible pathway programme, it is IELTS 5.5 or PTE 39. With at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, it is IELTS 5.0 or PTE 31.
These routes work with PTE vs IELTS scores alike, but they add time and cost, so they need careful planning. Whether a packaged route is right for your score and budget is part of your free assessment. Our IELTS guide gives a first look at band requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is easier, PTE or IELTS?
Neither is easier for everyone. PTE Academic often suits students who type fast and are comfortable speaking to a computer, while IELTS suits students who speak better to a person. A free level check on both formats shows which fits you.
Is PTE accepted in the UK for a student visa?
Yes, when you book PTE Academic UKVI at an approved centre and your course needs a Secure English Language Test. Standard PTE Academic is not the same test for UK visa purposes, so check the version before booking.
Is PTE vs IELTS different for Australia?
Both are accepted for the Australian student visa. For tests taken from 7 August 2025, the direct minimum is IELTS 6.0 or PTE Academic 47, and universities often ask for more.
Can I use PTE templates in 2026?
Relying on memorised templates is risky. Since August 2025, human reviewers check selected PTE Academic speaking and writing answers, and template-heavy responses can lose marks.
Is IELTS still paper-based in Pakistan?
No. IELTS in Pakistan is now delivered on computer, while the Speaking test is still a live conversation with an examiner. Computer delivery also allows One Skill Retake.
How long are PTE and IELTS scores valid?
Most universities and visa authorities accept PTE and IELTS scores for two years from the test date. The PTE vs IELTS validity rule is the same, but some universities set a shorter limit, so check before you apply.
Should I take IELTS Academic or General Training to study abroad?
Most students going abroad for a degree need IELTS Academic. IELTS General Training suits work and migration routes and some below-degree courses. If your UK course needs a Secure English Language Test, book IELTS for UKVI in the right type.
Is IELTS Online accepted for a study visa?
Often not. Many visa authorities, including Australia’s for the student visa, accept only tests taken at a secure test centre, not at home. Some universities accept IELTS Online for admission, so check both your university and your visa before booking.
Can I prepare for PTE vs IELTS online?
Yes. LingoLab runs live online IELTS and PTE classes, so you can prepare from anywhere in Pakistan. The PTE vs IELTS test itself must be taken at a test center for most visas.
Should I choose PTE or IELTS for Canada?
Most Canadian universities accept both, but some programmes list only certain tests. Your target university’s list decides the PTE vs IELTS choice, which we check in your free profile assessment.
