IELTS Writing Task 2 structure is the single biggest reason Pakistani students get stuck at Writing 6.0 — not vocabulary, not grammar. A clear IELTS essay structure tells the examiner exactly where your position, your reasons and your examples are, and our online IELTS writing classes train students in Multan, across Pakistan and in the Gulf to build it under real exam pressure.
Here is the problem with how most students learn the IELTS Writing Task 2 structure: they pick up one template from YouTube and use it for every question. The examiner sees the same IELTS essay structure, the same memorised phrases and an answer that misses half the question. Students from Lahore, Faisalabad and across Pakistan start with us online. What Is IELTS Writing Task 2? The 2026 Format
IELTS Writing Task 2 is a 250-word essay you write in about 40 minutes, and it counts twice as much as Task 1 in your Writing band. That is why the IELTS Writing Task 2 structure decides most of your Writing score. In Pakistan, the whole test is now taken on computer.
| Feature | IELTS Writing Task 2 |
|---|---|
| Time | About 40 minutes (of the 60-minute Writing test) |
| Minimum length | 250 words — shorter answers lose marks |
| Weight | Twice as much as Task 1 |
| Marking | 4 criteria, each 25% |
| Delivery in Pakistan | On computer (paper IELTS ended in mid-2026) |
| Academic vs General Training | Both write an essay; topics are of general interest |
The official IELTS Academic Writing format confirms the timing, the 250-word minimum and the double weight. Since mid-2026, IELTS is delivered on computer only, so you type your essay. A handwritten “Writing on Paper” option exists only in selected markets.
The Four Marking Criteria in Plain Words
Every IELTS Writing Task 2 answer is marked on four equal criteria:
- Task Response: did you answer every part of the question, with a clear position and developed ideas?
- Coherence and Cohesion: is your IELTS essay structure logical, with clear paragraphs and natural linking?
- Lexical Resource: do you use a range of accurate, topic-specific vocabulary?
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: do you mix simple and complex sentences with few errors?
Notice that the IELTS Writing Task 2 structure touches the first two criteria directly — half of your IELTS Writing Task 2 marks.
Task 2 in IELTS Academic, General Training and UKVI
The essay task is the same type in IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training and IELTS for UKVI. IELTS for UKVI has the same content as the normal test; it is simply the version approved for certain UK visa routes. Your IELTS Writing Task 2 structure works the same way in all three.

The Basic IELTS Writing Task 2 Structure: Four Paragraphs
The basic IELTS Writing Task 2 structure is four paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a short conclusion. That shape is simple and widely known. What separates a 6.0 from a 7.5 is not the shape — it is what you put inside each paragraph and how clearly it answers the question.
| Paragraph | Its job | Rough length |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | Paraphrase the question + give your position | 40–50 words |
| Body paragraph 1 | First main idea, explained and supported | 90–110 words |
| Body paragraph 2 | Second main idea (or the other view), explained and supported | 90–110 words |
| Conclusion | Restate your position and main ideas | 30–40 words |
This IELTS Writing Task 2 structure gives you about 260–300 words, which is safely above the minimum. But the table is only the skeleton of a good IELTS essay structure. The examiner is checking whether each body paragraph has one central idea, a clear explanation and a relevant example — and whether your position stays consistent from the introduction to the conclusion.
This is where self-study of the IELTS Writing Task 2 structure usually breaks. Students copy the four boxes, fill them with general sentences and wonder why the band does not move. In our online IELTS writing classes, every essay is marked against the four criteria, so you see exactly which paragraph is costing you the band.
IELTS Essay Structure by Question Type
The right IELTS essay structure changes with the question type. IELTS Writing Task 2 uses five main question types, and each one asks for something different in your introduction and body paragraphs. Using an opinion-essay IELTS Writing Task 2 structure for a discussion question is one of the fastest ways to lose Task Response marks.
| Question type | What the question asks | The structure trap |
|---|---|---|
| Opinion (agree/disagree) | Your view on one statement | Sitting on the fence with no clear position |
| Discussion (both views) | Discuss two views + give yours | Writing about only one view |
| Advantages / disadvantages | Weigh both sides (sometimes “outweigh?”) | Missing the “which is greater” part |
| Problem / solution (causes / effects) | Explain problems and solutions | Listing problems without solutions |
| Two-part (direct) question | Answer two separate questions | Answering only the first question |
Each type has its own IELTS essay structure for the introduction and the body paragraphs. The full IELTS Writing Task 2 structure for each type, the planning method we teach for the first five minutes and marked band 7–8 model essays are part of our IELTS course, so you practise them with feedback rather than copying them blindly.
Why Your Essay Is Stuck at 6.0: 6 Hidden Structure Mistakes
These six IELTS Writing Task 2 structure mistakes keep Pakistani students at Writing 6.0, even with good English. Each one cuts your Task Response or Coherence score, and some cost you a full retake. We name the mistakes here; the exact fix for your own writing is worked out in class and in your free assessment.
1. One Memorised Template for Every Question
Examiners see the same memorised opening lines thousands of times. Memorised language does not show your real ability, and a template that ignores the question type turns your IELTS Writing Task 2 structure against you.
2. No Clear Position in the Introduction
Many essays never say what the writer actually thinks until the last line — or change position halfway. An unclear position is one of the most common reasons an IELTS Writing Task 2 answer stays at 6.0.
3. Answering Only Half the Question
Discussion and two-part questions have two jobs, and the IELTS essay structure must cover both. Students build an IELTS essay structure around the first part and one sentence on the second, which caps the band no matter how good the English is.
4. Ideas Listed, Not Developed
A body paragraph with three ideas and no explanation reads like a list, which breaks the IELTS Writing Task 2 structure. Examiners want one idea, explained and supported, not a paragraph of headings.
5. Running Out of Time on the Computer
Since IELTS moved to computer in Pakistan, students who type slowly or have never written under timed, typed conditions often finish without a conclusion — or under 250 words — even when their IELTS Writing Task 2 structure was planned well.
6. Under 250 Words or Off Topic
An essay under 250 words loses marks, and an essay that drifts away from the exact question loses even more. Both mistakes break your IELTS Writing Task 2 structure. They are easy to make under pressure and expensive to fix with a full retake.

IELTS Writing Band 7: What Your Country and Course Need
Many universities set a minimum in each skill, so a weak IELTS writing band 7 target can block an offer even when your overall score is fine. Writing is usually the lowest band for Pakistani students, which makes your IELTS Writing Task 2 structure the part of the test that decides most applications.
- UK: most universities set Writing minimums, and courses below degree level need a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI. Our UK study visa requirements blog explains the visa side, and you can see how to study in the UK.
- Canada: universities ask for IELTS Academic, but the post-study work permit has its own language rule, usually met with IELTS General Training. Read our Canada PGWP rules blog and our page to study in Canada.
- Ireland: universities commonly ask for minimums in every skill, Writing included. See our guide to studying in Ireland as a Pakistani student and the Ireland study visa page.
- New Zealand and Australia: universities set their own Writing minimums on top of visa rules. Our New Zealand student visa from Pakistan blog covers NZ, and you can explore options to study in Australia.
Competitive courses often want IELTS writing band 7. The exact minimum for your university and course is checked in your free profile assessment.
Low Writing Score? Official Routes That Still Work
A low Writing band does not always end your plan. IELTS on computer offers One Skill Retake, and some countries have official lower-score routes through foundation, pathway or English courses. The right route depends on your country, your course level and how far you are from your IELTS writing band 7 or 6.0 target.
- One Skill Retake: on computer-delivered IELTS, you can retake one skill — such as Writing — within 60 days of your original test, instead of the whole test.
- UK: courses below degree level, such as foundation and many pathway programmes, need English at CEFR B1 through a Secure English Language Test — for example IELTS for UKVI 4.0 in each skill.
- Australia: for tests taken from 7 August 2025, the student visa minimum is IELTS 6.0; with at least 10 weeks of English (ELICOS), a foundation or an eligible pathway, it is 5.5; with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, it is 5.0.
These routes add time and cost, so they need careful planning. Our IELTS guide gives a first look at band requirements; your best route is part of your free assessment.

The same online format is available for all other LingoLab tests — PTE, TOEFL, Duolingo, LanguageCert, Oxford ELLT, OET and Spoken English.
Other tests write differently: PTE Academic has a shorter, computer-scored essay, while Duolingo and TOEFL use their own task types. If Writing keeps pulling your IELTS down, your free assessment checks whether another test fits your country better.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best IELTS Writing Task 2 structure?
The standard IELTS Writing Task 2 structure is four paragraphs: introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The best version depends on the question type — opinion, discussion, advantages and disadvantages, problem and solution, or two-part questions each need a slightly different plan.
How many words should an IELTS Task 2 essay have?
You must write at least 250 words, and shorter essays lose marks. Most strong answers are about 260–300 words, which leaves time to plan and check within 40 minutes.
Is IELTS essay structure the same for Academic and General Training?
Yes. Task 2 is an essay in both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, marked on the same four criteria, so the IELTS essay structure works the same way. Only Task 1 is different.
How can I get IELTS writing band 7?
IELTS writing band 7 needs a clear position, fully developed ideas, logical paragraphing, a range of vocabulary and frequent error-free sentences. Most students need marked feedback on their IELTS essay structure to see which of these is holding them back.
Can I use memorized templates in IELTS Writing Task 2?
Memorized phrases do not show your real ability and do not earn credit, and a template that ignores the question type lowers Task Response. A flexible IELTS Writing Task 2 structure you adapt to each question works better.
Can I retake only IELTS Writing?
Yes, if you took IELTS on computer. One Skill Retake lets you retake one skill, such as Writing, within 60 days of your original test instead of repeating all four sections.
Is IELTS writing coaching available online?
Yes. LingoLab runs online IELTS writing classes on IELTS essay structure with a live teacher, essays marked against the official criteria and timed computer practice, plus on-campus classes in Multan.
Can I join online IELTS classes from Dubai, Saudi Arabia or Qatar?
Yes. Pakistanis in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Doha and Muscat join our online IELTS writing classes, with evening and weekend batches that suit Gulf time.
